"Five Years Later"

Met her at Westminster Café
I was servin’ cappuccino, she was sippin’ latte,
“Hey, garcon, could I have a paper?”
“Ma’am, it’d be a pleasure to be your waiter”
How time passes...
Is it just five years later,
           not ten?
Handed her ‘The Global News’
She said, “Everywhere the governments are turnin’ the screws,
If I see one more stupid headline...”
“...gonna blow it up myself with a God-forsaken landmine!”
How time passes...
Is it just five years later,
           not ten?
“Look at this, another crooked corporation”
“Will they pay us back with interest and some compensation?”
“Now they’re talkin’ ‘bout the Monarchy and green legislation”
“Makes me mad when they act like it’s a revelation!”
How time passes...
Is it just five years later,
           not ten?
Asked her out ‘n’ started to date her,
Intrigued, we got married a little later,
Soon to be like oil on water,
When water boils, oil just gets hotter!
How time passes...
Is it just five years later,
           not ten?
Meant to be, or not to be?
I’ll never know,
The sweetest nut I’d ever eat
Or the bitterest pistachio?
Meant to be, or not to be
A tale of woe?
A waste of precious youth
Or precious opportunity to grow?
Been awhile since we parted ways,
Towards the end we were both just counting the days,
If she asked me again if I could bring her a paper,
I’d say, “Sorry, Ma’am, wait for your own waiter...”

How time passes...
Is it just five years later,
           not ten?
How time passes...
Just five years later,
           not ten?
Five years later,
     not ten!
